The ventricular septum, also known as the interventricular septum, is a muscular structure that divides the left and right ventricles of the heart. It cosists of a thick muscular part, and a thin membranous part.

The atrioventricular septum results from an offset in the attachment of the two atrioventricular valves. This offset situates a portion of the ventricular septum in an atrioventricular position. This particular section is recognized as the atrioventricular septum and it is positioned posterior to the hinge of the tricuspid valve.
