Two lesser wings originate on the superior anterior part of the body of the sphenoid. They are triangular and project laterally.
The lesser palatine canals are tunnels that pass through the pyramidal process of the palatine bone. They open on the inferior surface of the bone via lesser palatine foramina. (1)
The lateral surface of the zygomatic bone is convex and smooth. It forms the bone’s outer surface. (1)
The lateral pterygoid plate is the thin plate that is located laterally. Its lateral surface takes part in forming the infratemporal fossa, and its medial surface takes part in forming the pterygoid fossa. (1)
